Community Space and Placemaking
I partner with local governments and property developers to design and activate community spaces that foster connection, drive engagement, and create vibrant, thriving places.
So much of life has moved online - work, socialising, even the little daily interactions that used to make up our communities. And while digital tools keep us in touch, they just aren't the same as IRL human connection.
Nothing beats being in a space together - sharing energy, reading body language, having spontaneous conversations. That’s where real community happens.
My approach is rooted in the belief that successful community projects and spaces are built by and for the community, and I bring over 15 years of experience in community building to create meaningful, sustainable impact.
How I Work
Community-Led Design: I begin by deeply understanding the needs and aspirations of the local community. Through research, workshops, and collaborative design sessions, I ensure that the space reflects the unique character and needs of the people who will use it.
Strategic Activation: I develop comprehensive activation strategies that bring the space to life. This includes programming, events, and initiatives that foster a sense of belonging, encourage social interaction, and promote community participation.
Inclusive Innovation: I champion inclusive innovation by creating opportunities for residents to learn new skills, connect with resources, and pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions. By leveraging partnerships with local organisations, I ensure that the space becomes a hub for creativity, learning, and economic empowerment.
Sustainable Placemaking: My goal is to create community spaces that are not only vibrant and engaging but also sustainable and resilient. I work closely with developers and local governments to ensure that the space is designed and managed in a way that minimises environmental impact and maximises social value.
Case Study: THE GLASSHOUSE
In November 2024 I branded, designed and launched The Glasshouse for Innovate Cambridge, an innovation hub designed to foster collaboration and connection in the city - in a space generously provided by Railpen.
Seeing how quickly a physical space can bring people together has only reinforced my belief that we need more places designed for human interaction where true community can grow.
I designed and implemented a membership criteria and growth strategy which grew to 400 members in it’s first three months of opening, saw over 1000 visits and hosted 25+ events by partnering with local, national and international innovation partners.
